Comprehensive Eye exams

Assessing and protecting your long-term health is our top priority. Yearly comprehensive eye exams offer us an opportunity to really explore the health of not only your eyes but also your overall health as well. We are able to diagnose and treat a variety of eye diseases and identify general health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, neurological risks and tumors, brain trauma, and other health concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Comprehensive eye exams are not only necessary for updating your prescription - they are vital for everyone as a routine part of maintaining your general health.

The comprehensive eye exam consists of a through history and medication review, health screening (including meibography), dilation if appropriate, special testing, and a refraction to ensure you always have the clearest vision possible! Other special services are provided as needed such as retinal imaging and visual fields.

For those interested in contact lens wear, we offer fitting evaluations along with insertion/removal classes.

For those concerned about dry eyes, we offer dry eye evaluations even if you are not due for your annual comprehensive exam.

Retinal Imaging
  • Using a Canon Retinal Camera we are able to take a detailed picture of the back of your eye (the retina). This helps Dr. Tolchin diagnose and treat retinal disorders such as Glaucoma, Diabetes, and Macular Degeneration. It can also help the doctor to monitor freckles that can appear in the retina to make sure they are not growing or changing over time which could represent a Melanoma. The camera can document scarring in the retinal tissue, vascular disorders, as well as holes and tears of the thin retinal tissue.
  • For patients with healthy eyes Retinal Imaging is a great method of keeping a permanent digital record of the retinal tissue to monitor for healthy progression or noticing minor changes of the tissue over the years. This is a great new technology for any age.

Meibography
  • Using the LipiScan Dynamic Meibomian Imager or Meibox Meibographer Dr. Tolchin is able to assess the health of the meibomian glands of the upper and lower lids.
  • The meibomian glands are responsible for the production of meibum - the oily component of healthy tears. When these glands die or become clogged, oil production decreases leading to various evaporative dry eye issues. For more information on dry eye diseases and treatment options please visit our page here.
  • This small, non-invasive tool takes a special photograph to reveal the hidden glands of the upper and lower lids allowing Dr. Tolchin to create a treatment plan if necessary to uphold the health of your glands.

Visual Field
  • The Humphrey Visual Field Machine is used to test patients who have or are developing Glaucoma. This machine is also very important for patients who have had a stoke or brain trauma.
  • Patients who have developed Multiple Sclerosis or Rheumatoid Arthritis should also be tested as some of the medicines that treat these diseases can affect the eyes.
