Orthokeratology "Ortho-K"

A revolutionary NON-SURGICAL vision correction procedure that eliminates the need for glasses and contacts!

By using custom designed retainers, Ortho-K improves daytime vision by gently reshaping the surface of the eye WHILE YOU SLEEP!

What Causes Poor Vision?
  • Poor, blurred, distorted, and out-of-focus vision is caused when images fail to focus properly on the retina (the back of the eye).
  • This is caused when the cornea (the surface of the eye) is misshaped or the eye has grown too long (myopia causing nearsightedness) or too short (hyperopia causing farsightedness).

What Is Orthokeratology And How Does It Correct Vision?
  • A custom corneal reshaping retainer is made for each patient. This therapeutic retainer is designed to create the ideal curvature of your cornea to refocus light onto the perfect location on your retina in order to achieve clear vision.
  • The retainer is made from an advanced, highly oxygen-permeable material which allows the eyes to breathe overnight during wear to maintain excellent health.
  • Each night, while wearing the retainer, it gently molds and reshapes the curvature of your cornea. This reshaping corrects for myopia when you wake up.
  • The process is gentle, completely painless, non-invasive, and completely reversible!
  • When you wake up and remove the retainers you are left with a cornea which is now able to focus images perfectly to the retina causing clear, sharp, natural vision which will last for hours!

How Long Does It Take?
  • It can take from one to four weeks to achieve excellent vision results.
  • However, significant improvement can often be seen in as little as one night of wear!
  • With continued wear the effect of corneal reshaping gets stronger and lasts longer during the day.

Is It Safe?
  • Yes!
  • Ortho-K is a safe, non-invasive, and completely reversible procedure.
  • Ortho-K was developed in 1962 and has significantly improved over the years with great advances in technology. The procedure was approved by the FDA in 2002 and has been done on millions of patients both in the US and world-wide.
  • It is vital to wear the retainers only as prescribed by our doctor and to maintain all necessary progress office visits.
  • The risk of infection is no greater than regular contact-lens wear and can be minimized by practicing good hygiene.

Can My Kids Try Ortho-K? How Does Ortho-K Slow the Progression Of Myopia In Children?
  • Absolutely!
  • Children make great candidates for Ortho-K, they are highly motivated, excited to try new things, and learn how to take care of their retainers quickly. Wearing the retainers is painless and doesn't interfere with activities as they are only worn during bedtime.
  • The number of children with myopia (nearsightedness) has grown rapidly over the last 25 years. This is due to children spending more time studying, reading, and using technology such as the phone and computer.
  • Studies have shown that wearing Ortho-K retainers can significantly slow the progression of myopia. Children wearing Ortho-K retainers consistently experience decrease in myopic progression during treatment! Sometimes to achieve greater decrease in progression of myopia the addition of Atropine therapy is required.
  • Progressive myopia causes poor vision but can also lead to sight-threatening conditions later in life such as retinal detachments, glaucoma, and early cataracts if not addressed. The earlier a child develops myopia the more likely it is to progress to dangerously high levels. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now classifies progressive myopia as an epidemic!
